International Experience Canada (IEC) program, Permanent resident card, Refugee claim, Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)
International Experience Canada (IEC) is a set of programs enabling young people from participating countries to travel to Canada to live and work temporarily. Foreign nationals who are successful through one of the IEC programs will be authorized to apply for a Canadian work permit.
The IEC operates three separate programs. While IEC has general requirements, interested applicants should verify the requirements for the separate programs. Each program has unique requirements and can result in a different form of work authorization:
The Working Holiday visa is ideal for individuals who want the freedom to work for any employers while travelling in Canada. Applicants who are successful through the Working Holiday program receive an open work permit. Open work permits are not tied to specific employers, so individuals have the freedom to change employers and locations while living in Canada.
The Young Professionals program allows foreign nationals to gain Canadian professional work experience by working with a Canadian employer. This program requires that applicants have a job offer from a Canadian employer in order to apply. Applicants who are successful through the Young Professionals program will be issued an employer-specific work permit. This means they must work for the same employer in the same location during their stay in Canada.
The International Co-op Internship program allows international students to complete an internship or work placement in Canada as a requirement for their post-secondary education. This program requires that applicants have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada which is required for their completion of studies.
It is encouraged for permanent residents of Canada to carry a valid PR card at all times. Not only does the PR card allow a permanent resident to show proof of status, but it also allows a person to freely travel in and out of the country. If a PR card is within 9 months of expiration, or it has already expired, a permanent resident can submit an application for a new PR card.
A nation that upholds the right to life, the right to freedom, and the right to protection and security, Canada has supported refugee and humanitarian cases since signing the Status of Refugees of the Geneva Convention in 1951.
Individuals who present themselves at a Canadian port of entry, an inland Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may make an asylum claim. From there, the CBSA or IRCC agent will determine if this individual is eligible to claim asylum. In addition to providing well-founded proof of persecution in their country of origin, those seeking asylum will also undergo biometric, biographic, security and criminality checks before they can be granted refugee status in Canada.
On July 1, 2020, the new Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) entered into force.
What CUSMA does
The Atlantic Immigration Program is a pathway to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers and international graduates from a Canadian institution who want to work and live in 1 of Canada’s 4 Atlantic provinces—New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador. The program helps employers hire qualified candidates for jobs they haven’t been able to fill locally.
The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot is a community-driven program. It’s designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities by creating a path to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers who want to work and live in one of the participating communities.
When you first come to Canada as a visitor, you use one of these documents to enter:
If you want to extend your stay in Canada as a visitor (stay in Canada longer), you need to apply for a visitor record (a document that gives you status as a visitor in Canada and allows you to stay longer
includes a new expiry date).
If you have a work permit that’s about to expire or that you need to change, you must apply to extend it or change the conditions on it.
You should apply to extend your work permit at least 30 days before your current permit expires.
If your temporary status in Canada (e.g. your study permit) has expired and you did not apply for an extension before the expiry date, you must apply to restore your status within 90 days of the expiry date if you want to stay in Canada. This process is known as restoration of status.
It is important to note that since status and authorization are not the same under the IRPA, an applicant can only restore their status to that of a temporary resident and to the authorization that they held immediately prior to the restoration application. As an example, a student who lost their status cannot apply to restore temporary resident status with authorization to work.
